Update: In a social media message, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter bids adieu to Michigan…

Jesse Minter has left the Michigan Wolverines to take a new position as defensive coordinator after two seasons.

Minter clarified on social media on Tuesday night that he will not be returning to Ann Arbor, though it is unclear exactly where he is going. Rumor has it that he is going to be Jim Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator in Los Angeles.
As soon as Minter arrived in Michigan, he had a significant influence. at his first season at Ann Arbor, he led a Michigan defense that finished sixth in the NCAA in total defense, seventh in scoring defense and rushing defense, and seventh in pass efficiency defense. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award. Mike Morris, D.J. Turner II, and Mazi Smith, three members of that defense, were chosen in the NFL draft of the previous year. Morris was also picked to the second team of the All-Americans for the 2022 campaign.

This last season, Michigan’s defense improved even more, allowing only 247.0 yards per game—a lower total than any other college football club. In addition, Minter’s team committed the fourth-highest number of turnovers in the nation (27) while giving up the fewest passing touchdowns (eight), the fifth-fewest rushing yards (90.0), and the fifth-fewest rushing touchdowns (nine).

A few defenders were recognized for their individual efforts; Sports Illustrated named Will Johnson an All-American, and ESPN, FOX, and TSN selected Mike Sainristil an All-American. Sainristil is among the players anticipated to hear their name called during the April draft, along with a number of other defense players from this past season who will go on to have NFL careers.

Before coming to Michigan, Minter coached in the NFL for four seasons, all with the Baltimore Ravens, where he was the defensive backs coach in 2020. Before moving to Michigan, he was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Vanderbilt.

To say that Minter would be missed around here would be an understatement. Without their strong defense and the inventive strategies he threw at opposing teams in pivotal games, the Wolverines would not have won a national championship this past season.

It’s unknown right now who will take Minter’s place as Michigan’s defensive coordinator, but we wish Minter luck on his next endeavor and will keep you informed while Michigan searches for a replacement.
