Sophomore right-hander Mitch Voit, who achieved All-American status last season, was a standout on the mound for the Michigan baseball team. However, the bullpen faced a significant challenge due to a lack of depth. Consequently, the Wolverines are placing a strong emphasis on developing their bullpen for the 2024 season.
With a roster that includes 26 new players, the team is relying on young pitchers to step up and fill the gaps. Eleven freshmen and two transfers have joined Michigan, and there are high expectations for their contributions on the mound.
Wolverines coach Tracy Smith emphasized the urgency for these young pitchers to make an immediate impact. He noted that there is considerable talent among the freshmen pitchers, despite the uncertainty that comes with transitioning to collegiate-level play.
One standout among the freshman pitchers is right-hander Dylan Vigue, who earned several accolades in high school, including Perfect Game All-American Preseason honors. He is expected to play a key role in the rotation early in the season, and his teammates are already showing support for him.
Another promising freshman is right-hander Wyatt Novara, who recorded 287 strikeouts in his high school career and pitched a no-hitter in his senior year. Left-hander Alfredo Velazquez, who also excelled as a hitter in high school, is another two-way player to watch.
In addition to the freshmen, the Wolverines have a group of veterans who will contribute to the pitching staff. Voit, who had a successful season last year, will continue to be a key player. Fifth-year left-hander Jacob Denner and senior right-hander Chase Allen, who is returning from an injury, will also provide valuable experience.
Despite the presence of experienced players, the bullpen’s lack of depth remains a concern. The team is relying on the freshmen to quickly adapt to collegiate play and contribute to the team’s success.
Coach Smith acknowledged the disparity between the team’s veteran and inexperienced pitchers, noting that the bullpen’s youth could lead to both growth and mistakes. The team’s infield defense will provide support, but ultimately, the success of each play starts with a pitch.
Michigan’s pitching talent will be put to the test, and the young pitchers are eager to rise to the challenge.
