Breaking: Falcons among team, coach, or player who will breakout in the 2024 season

Many have characterized the Falcons as a talented but underperforming team, one that is just a “quarterback away” from being competitive. While Terry Fontenot and Arthur Smith didn’t achieve their desired win-loss record in their three-year tenure, they did leave behind a favorable situation for Raheem Morris to take over.

The team’s salary cap is in good shape, they have more draft picks than usual, and the roster is in a solid position. The Falcons have approximately $25 million in cap space for this offseason, which could increase to around $45 million with some minor roster adjustments. They also hold the 8th overall pick in the draft, and potentially an extra second-round pick if the Jaguars extend Calvin Ridley.

While there are some gaps to fill on the roster, it’s in a much better state than when Fontenot took over. The offensive line is set to retain all five starters, and few teams can match the young trio of skill players in Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and Bijan Robinson.

On the defensive side, David Onyemata and Grady Jarrett form a formidable interior duo, supported by Kaden Elliss at the second level. The secondary boasts two All-Pros in Jessie Bates and A.J. Terrell.

Although there are a few areas that need attention, the Falcons have a roster brimming with potential, which is why Seth Walder of ESPN has picked them as his breakout team for 2024.

The Falcons have already shown talent and potential, and with the addition of coach Raheem Morris and a new offensive system led by coordinator Zac Robinson, they are poised for success. A capable quarterback could significantly elevate the team’s performance, and there are several ways the Falcons could address this need, such as through the draft, Kirk Cousins, or Justin Fields. Any of these options would likely be an improvement over the Desmond Ridder-Taylor Heinicke combination from last season.

Ultimately, the Falcons’ success will hinge on the quarterback they acquire this offseason. Poor quarterback play can significantly impact a talented team, as seen last year. Raheem Morris will face pressure to deliver wins quickly, or his seat could become increasingly uncomfortable.
