Breaking: 2023 Falcons roster review: Injuries mar a strong year

The Atlanta Falcons’ offensive line was a topic of optimism last summer, with many excited about its potential to support the team’s offense. Returning four of five starters from a successful 2022 season and adding promising rookie Matthew Bergeron, the line was expected to be a major asset. However, the offense struggled despite the line’s strong performance, and the team’s long-term outlook on the line remains uncertain.

Jake Matthews, the team’s left tackle, had a solid season, particularly in pass protection. However, his run blocking has never been elite and may not improve as he ages. Matthew Bergeron, the left guard, had an up-and-down rookie season but showed promise. Center Drew Dalman had a strong year overall, particularly in run blocking, but struggled in pass protection. Right guard Chris Lindstrom, a Pro Bowler, had a slightly less impressive season than in 2022 but remains one of the league’s best guards. Right tackle Kaleb McGary had a good season despite injuries, and backup tackle Storm Norton performed well when called upon.

Overall, the line had a solid but inconsistent season in 2023. Injuries and a slow start to the season contributed to some struggles, but the line remained one of the team’s strengths. Looking ahead, the team has a strong core of linemen for 2024, but there are long-term questions at hand. Matthews and McGary are both approaching the end of their contracts, and replacing them could be challenging. The team will need to focus on developing young depth options and potentially drafting a young tackle to ensure the line’s success in the future.
