Update: Brunson scores 34 in loss to Celtics

Jalen Brunson had a standout performance, scoring 34 points and providing 9 assists, but the New York Knicks faced a tough loss against the Boston Celtics, falling 116-102 at the Garden.

Despite a balanced first half, the Knicks struggled to contain the Celtics’ offensive onslaught in the third quarter. Kristaps Porzingis, Jason Tatum, and Jaylen Brown hit consecutive three-pointers, giving Boston their first double-digit lead of the night at 76-66. Within six minutes, the Celtics extended their lead to 20 points.

The Knicks attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 99-90 early in the fourth quarter. However, they then went scoreless for nearly six minutes, during which the Celtics scored 10 points.

Josh Hart contributed 16 points, Donte DiVincenzo added 12, and Miles McBride led the bench with 11 points.

The Celtics were led by Jaylen Brown’s 30 points, with all of their starters scoring 12 or more points. Porzingis contributed 22 points, shooting 7-11 from the field, while Tatum finished with 19 points. The Celtics had an impressive shooting percentage of 56.8% overall, and during the closing minutes of the third quarter, they were shooting at an even higher rate of 71%.

The Knicks struggled with their shooting, managing just under 45% from the field, going 37-82. They heavily relied on Jalen Brunson, who scored half of the team’s total points in the first half. Additionally, the Knicks committed twice as many turnovers as the Celtics, with 14 compared to just 7, and were outscored 58-38 in the paint.

Looking ahead, the Knicks (34–23) will face the Pistons (8–48) at home on Monday at 7:30 PM.
