Breaking: Christian Horner investigation outcome to be announced before Bahrain GP

Red Bull is anticipated to deliver its decision on an inquiry into Christian Horner, the Formula 1 team principal, regarding alleged inappropriate conduct towards a female staff member.

In early February 2024, Horner came under scrutiny by the Red Bull parent company and has undergone interviews as part of the process. Horner has refuted any accusations. Red Bull is reviewing an extensive report and is expected to reach a conclusion before this week’s Bahrain Grand Prix, which commences with practice on Thursday and the race itself on Saturday.

Craig Slater of Sky Sports News stated, “We could get a resolution on this on Tuesday or Wednesday. That’s the guidance I’m getting.” He further explained that an independent barrister appointed by Red Bull’s parent company in Salzburg, Austria, conducted a thorough investigation, including 50 to 60 hours of interviews with various staff members. The report spans approximately 150 pages and will be presented to the Red Bull board.

The board consists of three individuals, including Oliver Mintzlaff, to whom Horner directly reports. Mintzlaff is the former chairman of RB Salzburg. Additionally, the shareholders of the company, Mark Matezchitz, son of Dietrich Mateschitz, who co-founded the company, and Chalerm Yoovidhya, the 51% shareholder in the Red Bull drinks company, are also involved. Yoovidhya is known to be a supporter of Horner.

There has been speculation about power struggles behind the scenes, possibly linked to the unfolding investigation. However, it is essential to separate the investigation from these speculations and await the board’s decision on the appropriate course of action.

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, emphasized the importance of handling the matter swiftly, stating, “They need to handle it swiftly because I don’t believe these are the type of headlines that Formula 1 wants or needs at this time.” He also stressed the significance of transparency in the process.

Horner has continued his duties as CEO and team principal of Red Bull despite the investigation. He has been present at the Bahrain International Circuit ahead of the first F1 race of the season.

The Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf reported on the allegations against Horner, stating that he was accused of sexual misconduct in December 2023. They claim to have seen sexually suggestive messages from Horner to the employee over a significant period, with stories circulating in the F1 paddock during the 2023 season.

During the pre-season testing press conference on February 22, Horner declined to comment on the investigation. However, Toto Wolff and Zak Brown both emphasized that the issue is significant for F1.

Wolff stated, “Formula 1 and what the teams do, we stand for inclusion, equality, fairness, and diversity, and that’s not only talking about it but living it day in, day out.” He emphasized the importance of a rigorous process and transparency in the investigation.

Brown echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for transparency and the importance of focusing on the sport rather than critical issues like these.

In conclusion, the investigation into Christian Horner’s alleged inappropriate behavior is a significant issue for Red Bull and Formula 1 as a whole. The outcome of the investigation and the subsequent actions taken by Red Bull will be closely watched by the F1 community.
