JUST IN: Stars Acquire Chris Tanev from Flames; Devils Facilitate Trade…

The Dallas Stars have acquired Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames just days before the NHL trade deadline. The Flames traded the 34-year-old defenseman along with a 2024 second-round pick, a conditional 2026 third-round pick, and prospect defenseman Artem Grushnikov to the Stars. The Flames retained 50 percent of Tanev’s remaining salary and initially traded him to the New Jersey Devils, who then traded him to the Stars. In exchange for retaining salary, the Stars sent the Devils a fourth-round pick in 2026. Additionally, the Stars acquired the rights to unsigned goaltender Cole Brady from the Devils through the Flames.

Tanev has been the subject of trade speculation throughout the season as he nears the end of his current contract. He will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) unless he signs an extension. In the 2023-2024 season, Tanev has recorded one goal and 13 assists in 56 games for the Flames. He leads the Flames in blocked shots with 171 and ranks fourth among their defensemen in average ice time per game at 19:50.

The acquisition of Tanev addresses the Stars’ need for a right-handed defenseman, as noted by Taylor Newby of The Hockey News’ Dallas Stars site last Friday. Tanev’s arrival provides depth to the Stars’ defensive lineup as they aim to strengthen their roster ahead of the trade deadline.
