After ten NFL seasons, veteran running back Rex Burkhead is ending his career.
The running back, who played for the Bengals, Patriots, and Texans in the past, announced his retirement on Instagram on Monday. He did not participate in the previous season.
Burkhead wrote on social media, “I’ve been fortunate to be able to play the game of football for 26 years and looking back there are many people I would like to thank.”
“Thank you to all of my coaches, strength coaches, trainers, physicians, owners, and other staff members for giving me the chance to fulfill my boyhood ambition and for always ensuring that I was giving it my all on the field. Going to work every day with all of you was an honor.”
After being selected in the 2013 Bengals draft, Burkhead played his first four seasons in Cincinnati. Burkhead became a Patriot in 2017 and established himself as a vital member of the New England team. In his first three years, he established himself as Tom Brady’s go-to dual-threat back. Along with two receptions for 15 yards and seven rushes for 43 yards, Burkhead helped the Patriots win Super Bowl LIII.
Burkhead played two seasons for the Texans after joining them in 2021. In his rookie season in Houston, he started five games, a career high, and was a member of an RB room that included Mark Ingram, Royce Freeman, Phillip Lindsay, and David Johnson. Houston selected Dameon Pierce in the next round, which caused Burkhead’s position on a 3-13-1 Texans squad to decline.
With 1,908 running yards on 488 carries, 17 rushing touchdowns, and 192 receptions for 1,534 yards and nine scores, the 33-year-old closes his career with impressive stats.
