The impending move of Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo to Celta Vigo is poised to thwart any chances of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jonny joining the La Liga side.
Atlántico, a local newspaper covering Celta, reports that the club initially targeted Wolves’ Jonny to reinforce their defense. However, the focus has now shifted to Manquillo, who has yet to feature for Newcastle in the current season.
Celta’s manager, Rafael Benítez, is familiar with the capabilities of right-back Manquillo from their time together at Newcastle. The 29-year-old, primarily utilized as a left-back under Benítez, made 44 appearances for the Spanish manager, coincidentally in the same position preferred by Jonny.
Reportedly, Manquillo arrived in the city yesterday to complete the necessary transfer formalities. Although the announcement of the deal was delayed due to minor issues, it is expected to be officially revealed today. According to the newspaper, Manquillo is set to ink a contract that will keep him at Celta Vigo until 2025.
