Former Chicago White Sox utility infielder Danny Mendick is set to join the 26 non-roster invitees for the 2024 spring training in Arizona. This cohort of free agents comprises notable right-handed pitchers such as Justin Anderson, Joe Barlow, Jesse Chavez, Chad Kuhl, and Jake Woodruff.
Returning to the fold is local talent Mark Payton, who made appearances in eight games with the Sox in 2022. Payton will vie for a spot alongside outfielders Brett Phillips, Kevin Pillar, and Rafael Ortega, with catcher Chuckie Robinson completing the list of free agents.
Internally, the team will have 14 players present at Glendale for Spring Training, including promising prospects Colson Montgomery and Edgar Quero. Montgomery, a highly regarded shortstop, ranks ninth overall on MLB Pipeline’s latest list of prospects, while Quero holds the 89th position, according to Baseball Prospectus. Catchers Adam Hackenberg and Carlos Perez, along with veterans Max Stassi and Martin Maldonado, will also join the fray.
The roster will feature familiar names and emerging talents, including right-handers Jordan Leasure and Nick Nastrini, acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the 2023 trade deadline. Nastrini, a talented starting pitcher, is ranked 54th overall by Baseball Prospectus. Additional right-handed pitchers from within the organization include Jonathan Cannon, Edgar Navarro, Nick Padilla, and Lane Ramsey. Left-handers Ky Bush, acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, and Fraser Allard will complement the pitching staff.
In the infield, Tim Elko and Zach Remillard will bolster the team’s depth.
Spring training is set to commence on Feb. 14, with pitchers and catchers reporting first for physicals and initial workouts, followed by position players on Feb. 19. The first full-squad workout is also scheduled for Feb. 19. The White Sox will kick off their 32-game Cactus League on Feb. 23 with a matchup against the Cubs in Mesa.
