BREAKING: FORMER MICHIGAN LINEBACKER JOEY VELAZQUEZ TRANSFERS TO OHIO STATE AS A WALK-ON

Michigan alum Joey Velazquez, originally from Columbus and a graduate of DeSales High School, has transferred to Ohio State, according to a spokesperson for the Buckeyes. Velazquez, who was rated as a three-star recruit in the 2019 class, will join Ohio State as a walk-on for the 2024 season.

During his time at Michigan, the 6-foot, 222-pound linebacker appeared in 16 games spread across five seasons. His game time came during his freshman year in 2019 (one game), his redshirt sophomore year in 2021 (10 games), and his redshirt junior year in 2022 (five games). Notably, he did not see any action during the 2020 or 2023 seasons. Throughout his tenure at Michigan, Velazquez recorded eight tackles and one fumble recovery.

In addition to football, Velazquez also participated in baseball at Michigan, where he served as an outfielder for four years. His contributions helped the Wolverines reach the NCAA Regionals in both 2021 and 2022. Across 100 games, Velazquez made 68 starts and compiled a batting average of.255, along with 17 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, and 51 RBIs. However, it’s been confirmed by an Ohio State spokesperson that Velazquez will focus solely on football during his time with the Buckeyes.

Recently, Ohio State’s linebacker unit gathered to watch Super Bowl LVIII together, with graduate assistant James Laurinaitis sharing a photo of the coaches and players. In the background of the photo, Velazquez can be spotted wearing a black Nike jacket.
