Poitras Sidelined for Remainder of Season After Shoulder Surgery…

The Boston Bruins delivered disappointing news on Wednesday evening, revealing that their rookie centerman, Matt Poitras, would be sidelined for the rest of the season following shoulder surgery requiring a five-month rehabilitation period.

The decision to undergo a successful right shoulder stabilization procedure was carefully considered by both the team and Poitras’ family. Ultimately, it was deemed beneficial for the 19-year-old to have the surgery now rather than after the season. Bruins GM Don Sweeney, coach Montgomery, and Poitras, along with his family and advisors, collectively agreed that this course of action would be most advantageous for his future, given his age.

Montgomery emphasized that opting for surgery now positions Poitras to strengthen his body and adequately prepare for the challenges of the NHL in his second season. Waiting until after the playoffs would have compromised his ability to build strength during the summer, potentially setting him back in his development.

Poitras, who finishes his rookie season with 15 points in 33 games, will undergo rehabilitation with the Bruins’ support. Montgomery affirmed that the team would be actively involved in his recovery process.

Reflecting on Poitras’ first season, Montgomery highlighted the rookie’s understanding of the league’s demands and his potential for success. Poitras recognizes his abilities and areas for improvement, particularly the need to develop physical strength and stamina to secure a permanent spot in the NHL lineup next season.
