The Los Angeles Rams enjoyed a breakout performance from running back Kyren Williams during the previous season. Williams, a product of Notre Dame, impressed with 1,144 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns across just 12 games. However, his physical style of play resulted in missed games throughout the season, culminating in a broken hand during the NFC Wild Card game against the Detroit Lions.
Given the current lack of experienced depth in the backup running back positions, with only Ronnie Rivers and Zach Evans listed, the Rams might consider bolstering their options. Williams has demonstrated his capability as an all-around back, making it crucial for LA to seek cost-effective solutions. This is where former Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins could fit perfectly.
Dobbins has faced his fair share of injuries, including ACL and Achilles tears in recent seasons. While unfortunate for him, this could work in the Rams’ favor by reducing his free agency price tag, which Sportrac estimates at around $2 million per year.
But why would the Rams be interested in Dobbins despite his injury history and relatively low cost?
When healthy, Dobbins has showcased the potential to be a top-tier running back in the league. With an impressive career average of 5.8 yards per carry and a knack for finding the end zone, he could address the Rams’ struggles in the red zone, particularly evident in their recent playoff game against the Lions.
Moreover, at just 25 years old, Dobbins still has plenty of room for growth. He wouldn’t need to shoulder a significant workload in LA, given Williams’ established role as the primary back. If Dobbins can replicate his 2020 performance, where he amassed 805 yards and nine touchdowns on only 134 carries, he and Williams could form a formidable duo.
Dobbins presents a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for the Rams. As a free agent this offseason and with minimal guaranteed money involved, he could be released at any time if needed. Considering the success of previous reclamation projects under head coach Sean McVay, such as Kevin Dotson from the Steelers, Dobbins could be the next success story for the Rams.
