Breaking: Mayor Johnson comments on Bears and White Sox stadium pursuits

Chicago sports fans have been buzzing about stadium plans for the city’s two major professional teams, the Bears and the White Sox. Both teams are considering new homes, with the Bears owning land in Arlington Heights and the White Sox eyeing a plot near the South Loop called “The 78.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is optimistic that both teams will remain in the city, despite the possibility of new stadiums. He expressed gratitude that both organizations are committed to having conversations about their futures.

White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf recently visited Springfield to discuss public funding for a new stadium. He has his sights set on “The 78” for the team’s new home, but the project comes with a hefty price tag.

Meanwhile, the Bears have purchased land in Arlington Heights, valued at nearly $125 million. Bears president and CEO Kevin Warren has emphasized the appeal of Chicago as a long-term destination for the team, citing the city’s beauty, architecture, history, and tradition.

The White Sox’s lease at Guaranteed Rate Field expires in 2029, while the Bears’ lease at Soldier Field expires in 2033. However, the Bears have the option to exit their lease earlier, with a penalty.

Overall, both teams are exploring their options for new stadiums, but the city of Chicago remains hopeful that they will continue to call the Windy City home.
